The Exposition was basically a’local’ version of the World’s Fair and San Diego built numerous buildings all over San Diego, but mostly in and around Balboa Park Named before the Exposition started – previously it was called’City Park’. The 261 page book covers San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles County, Riverside and San Bernadino. The binding is tight and secure with no loose pages and no markings anywhere on the book. [Land Promotional] Southern California Bulletin Vol. 9 Boston, May 1888. Title: [Land Promotional] Southern California Bulletin Vol. Description: [Land Promotional] Southern California Bulletin Vol. 9 Boston, May 1888, Southern California Publishing Company, Boston, Los Angeles, San Diego. Alfred Mudge & Son, Printers, Boston. 9 x 11.5 inches, 14pp. String-bound booklet on cream paper. Splitting at spine but entire booklet is holding. Toning and chipping to edges. Previous fold with light splitting at fold. Two errant pen marks on front page. Curious 1888 land promotional circular for Southern California published and printed in Boston, with addition offices in Los Angeles and San Diego. Not found in OCLC or commerce despite at least nine issues published. Probably marketed to easterners in the heart of winter. Most of the articles either have no by-line or credit local newspapers. The lone exception is an article titled “The Flora of Southern California” by T. Van Dyke, author of “Millionaires of a Day: an Inside History of the Great Southern California “Boom” and “Upland Game Birds” plus “The City and County of San Diego: Illustrated and Containing Biographical Sketches of Prominent Men and Pioneers. My guess is Van Dyke was the publisher of this apparently short-lived land promotional. Subject: 19th Century Pamphlets & Ephemera, Advertising, Ephemera, Land Promotional, Western Americana.
