Rare and fascinating three-volume set of everything known about Los Angeles up to 1930. The author starts with the earliest human migrations, covers the rule of Spain/Mexico, and then spends the most time talking about LA’s growth into a major city. Lots of slipsheet protected plates and illustrations. You will learn things like why we have Sherman Way and Sherman Oaks in the San Fernando Valley, and the origin of many, perhaps most, of LA’s names. Overall, a fascinating read, one required by any California history buffs. Curiously, many of the signatures under the portraits appear to be hand signed. I don’t really understand this; but you can feel the imprints of the grooves if you run your fingers over the signatures. However they did this, it’s just one of the many touches that gives a really high-quality feeling to the book that is not found in todays publications.
