Truman visited nearly every orange grove and vineyard in Los Angeles County gathering his statistics. Truman was a civil war correspondent and journalist, Truman wrote for the Los Angeles Star, which he acquired in 1873. Much of the book is expanded from articles he wrote for the newspaper. Of importance, beyond the colorful style, are the author’s observations on the agricultural advantages of southern California, particularly for the cultivation of fruit. Truman discusses specific mines, residences, fruit orchards, vineyards, and ranches as well as general patterns of agriculture, sheep and cattle raising, irrigation, and mineral resources. Beyond Los Angeles, he describes the towns and cities of Anaheim, Wilmington, and San Bernardino. He defines “semi-tropical” California as portions of Monterey, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Bernardino, and San Diego Counties, but devotes most of its attention to the city and county of Los Angeles and neighboring San Gabriel Valley.
