Original brown leather with gilt-stamped illustration and lettering, blind-stamped decor and ruling in cover, gilt-stamped lettering, tooling and ruling on spine; raised bands, bevelled edges and gilt dentelles. Light blue gilt-stamped decorative endpapers. Frontispiece engraving with tissue guard. Decorative headpieces and initials, and historiated endpieces. Containing a history of Los Angeles County from the earliest period of its occupancy to the present time, together with glimpses of its prospective future; with profuse illustrations of its beautiful scenery, full-page portraits of some of its most eminent men, and biographical mention of many of its pioneers and also of prominent citizens of today. The gilt lettering on the title reads: Pen Pictures From The Garden Of The World. Going to great length to collect the material necessary for an undertaking of this magnitude the publisher allows for only a small amount of erroneous material possibly being published and therefore states in the preface: The historical material in the biographical sketches were obtained with great difficulty, and therefore none of that matter is supposed to be dictated by those interviewed, for the purpose of advertising themselves of their business. Two or three citizens absolutely refused to give any dates with reference to their public career. Beautifully illustrated with portrait gravures, with tissue guards, architectural landmarks and landscapes of Los Angeles County. Binding with some wear along edges, chips at corners and light scuffing of bevelled edges, joints and boards. One inch closed tear at lower front joint. Very light age-toning of block. Number inked to bottom margin of preface. Some light sporadic foxing of block, occasionally more pronounced on plates. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
