HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery, Residences, Fine Blocks, Manufactories, from Original Sketches by Artists of the Highest Ability. Author: Wilson, John Albert Title: HISTORY OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery, Residences, Fine Blocks, Manufactories, from Original Sketches by Artists of the Highest Ability Publication: Oakland, California: Thompson & West, 1880. As an architectural depiction of early Los Angeles County, along with Wilson’s comprehensive description of the county’s townships, this book has no equal. It has come to be known ever since as simply the Thompson & West. Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories… Complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers. Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who’s who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J. Newhall, John Rowland, and W. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H. Lloyd and Co’s map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11″ x 15″; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading along the extremities of the boards; otherwise very good. Dawson Eighty 78; Layne 53.
