Evacuation Problems Evidenced To The Social Assistance Staff Of The Federal Security Agency In Los Angeles County February 9 to March 5, 1942. Author: Ryder, Winifred J. Title: Evacuation Problems Evidenced To The Social Assistance Staff Of The Federal Security Agency In Los Angeles County February 9 to March 5, 1942 Publication: [Los Angeles]: [Social Assistance Program of the Federal Security Agency], 1942. Description: 4to, corner stapled, mimeographed document, 3 pp. Document with creasing, yellowing, few small tears and chips. Scarce report by a social worker at the Los Angeles County branch of the Federal Security Agency, regarding problems that arose during the deportation of Japanese Americans from the county. The report notes that members of Social Security Board became responsible “for developing and putting into effect plans for the relocation and re-establishment of the alien groups”; it prints statistics on the issues that arose during this period of deportation, which included moving, housing, and financial aid, as well as text about “complications” that occurred in the deportation of Japanese-Americans from Terminal Island: The pressure of time brought to light confusion, fear and worry. Personal belongings of value were abandoned. Household effects were hurriedly stored in temporary facilities scattered throughout the County. At this point, lack of understanding of status was clearly shown. Members of the families of interned persons were confused about what resources to be used. Families feared separation, others feared the health hazards of congregate care. A rare document showing the complicity of social assistance workers in the incarceration of Japanese Americans. Antiquarian and collectible books, primitives and antiques. This listing was created by Bibliopolis.
