Beautiful ORIGINAL Charcoal Drawing Signed by Listed Artist Ben Messick (1901 -1981), framed and matted, with “Estate of Ben Messick FRSA” Stamp/Label located on the back of the frame (see pictures). On the front of the drawing in the lower-left corner, Ben Messick wrote “Studies for the Frank Wiggins Trade School Murals” by Ben Messick. This is a WONDERFUL example of a’Study of a Mural’ at a Historic Los Angeles Area college, by a prolific California/American artist. Ben Messick is a well-known, and well collected artist. Ben Messick has also been called “the American Daumier”. Frank Wiggins Trade School was founded in 1925, and was renamed Trade-Technical Junior College in 1954, and was eventually renamed to Los Angeles Trade-Technical College L. In the 1940s, he was a sketch artist for Disney Studios and Metro-Goldwyn Mayer and he taught at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1943 to 1951. From 1948 to 1953, he also taught classes at the San Diego School of Arts and Crafts. Messick’s vernacular observations are intended to bring to life the color and the spirit of his times. During the Depression years, he worked on a number of WPA murals in the Los Angeles area and did three murals for the United States Treasury Department in Washington DC. His work has been widely exhibited and is included in such collections as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Laguna Art Museum, and the Springfield Museum of Art in Missouri. Source: Peter Falk, Who Was Who in American Art Cline Fine Art files. The Drawing has the ORIGINAL’Estate of Ben Messick’ Label, and has an item number listed of “639D”, and has the original Estate of Ben Messick F. Someone wrote a date onto the estate-label of 11/93. The same person/handwriting also wrote, To Steve and Kathy, for all the hours spent on the Messick Project! Thanks, Mom and Dad (see pictures 4 & 11). The Frame is in’fair’ condition, as there is some loss to the staining on the front of the frame (pictured), and some smaller loss to the stain on two of the edges of the frame (not pictured, but can provide upon request). The Frame is 19 1/4″ x 16 3/4″. The Charcoal Drawing measures 11 3/4″x 9 1/4″ (measurements taken from visible portion of drawing within the matting). The dust cover has been taped around perimeter of the back of the frame (picture #4). In the bottom right-hand corner on the back of the frame, under the tape, you can see’1500′ was written on the back of the frame onto the dust cover perhaps the original asking price? This drawing was hung away from sunlight in a smoke-free home. The Original Charcoal Drawing has a few minor condition issues from what I can see without taking the frame and matting apart (I would rather leave that endeavor to the new owner). The paper of the drawing has a few small tears (pictures 8, 9, 10), but whomever had the drawing framed, also had the tears repaired by the framer. You cannot lift the paper from the areas of the tear(s), as they have been repaired in a manner to prevent further damage. The few tears are barely noticeable, as you have to come really close to the picture to inspect for imperfections. There are also a few creases due to age (can see in picture 3), but has a more noticeable crease in the upper right-hand corner of the drawing (see picture 12). I have tried to give a full-disclosure of the drawings condition/issues, but in case you have any additional queries, would be more than happy to provide additional pictures. Would be happy to provide additional pictures upon request. I always strive to offer 5-Star Service! (ASKART has Ben Messick having lived from 1891 – 1981). Thank you for your understanding.

Ginger Osgood CHOIR 1962 SIGNED Serigraph Edition of 33
This is a 1962 serigraph print on paper by Ginger Osgood edition of 33. The print is in its original mid-century glass front frame with gilt trim and measures 15″ x 12″. The back is undisturbed from it’s original mid-century framing but condition of print looks excellent. There are 2 additional prints from Ginger and 1 additional print of the same era from her husband, R. Freeman Worthley, available in my shop. The set of 4 prints would make a stunning gallery wall! Ginger Osgood worked in many media, but she is best known for her work in serigraphy, a refinement of the commercial silk-screen printing process, in which all the work is done completely by hand. Osgood and her husband, R. Freeman Worthley, are considered to be not only pioneers in the advancement of this process, but masters of the medium. Osgood also created collagraphs, original prints pulled from plates on whose surface is a collage of textured materials, resulting in an embossed image. Her works in these media are widely thought of as among the best examples of serigraphs and collagraphs in existence. Beyond their testament to Osgood’s technical expertise, they glow with her intelligence, enthusiasm, and joy in her chosen form of self-expression. Born in Yokohama, Japan in 1918, Ginger Osgood studied at the Art Students League in New York, and in Los Angeles at UCLA, the Jepson Art Institute, and Otis Art Institute (then called the Los Angeles County Art Institute), where she earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1958.

Los Angeles UFOs Stimson Unidentified Enemy Planes February 26 1942 B20

Los Angeles UFOs Stimson Unidentified Enemy Planes February 26 1942 B20
Baltimore News-Post February 26 1942. Original Newspaper (34 Pages). “Enemy Agents flew Planes over California—Stimson”. Many dozed off again while 12,000 air raid wardens reported faithfully to their posts, most of them expecting nothing more than a dress rehearsal for a possible future event – an invasion of the United States by Japan. At 3:36, however, they were shocked and their slumbering families rudely roused again, this time by sounds unfamiliar to most Americans outside the military services. The roar of the 37th Coast Artillery Brigade’s antiaircraft batteries jolted them out of bed and before they could get to the windows the flashing 12.8 pound shells were detonating with a heavy, ominous boomp – boomp – boomp and the steel was already raining down. All radio stations had been ordered off the air at 3:08. But the news was being written with fingers of light three miles high on a clear star-studded blackboard 30 miles long. FATE MAGAZINE: World War II UFO Scare. In the early morning hours of February 25, 1942, suddenly appearing out of nowhere, but most likely doing so only after dropping out of the night sky initially from a steep angle out over the Pacific on a curving south to east trajectory, a huge object of unknown origin, possibly with protective detection devices on, at a lower altitude levels off. The object continues on a trajectory east toward the city of Los Angeles at ultra high speed barely skimming the water just above the surface. At 120 miles out, the object most likely picks up electronic probes from the Army long range listening apparatus or rudimentary early radar and retracts it’s entry shields, reducing it’s speed to a near crawl some 50 miles out, turning inland somewhere near Point Dume. It then turned south in the gap in the mountains around Sepulveda Boulevard and Mullholland Drive coming in BEHIND the aimed direction of the majority of the anti-aircraft guns and any possible radar or long range listening devices. In a continuing steeply angled climb out of the Santa Monica mountains the object curved slightly to the east around and well above the 511 foot altitude of Baldwin Hills in what appeared to be a concerted effort to stay away from all the potential aircraft and armament associated with Mines Field (now LAX). The object turned westward toward the ocean coming out over the aircraft manufacturing plants near the El Segundo tank farm, then, dropping altitude, south along the coast. Earlier, as the unidentified target continued on it’s apparent approach toward the Los Angeles area only to disappear behind the mountains inland west along the coast, the air raid warning system regional controller, still jittery from the oil refinery attack in the same general area only a few hours before, ordered the newly installed antiaircraft batteries to go to Green Alert — ready to fire.
