Vintage / Antique Group Los Angeles County Street Maintenance Wood Sign & Two Dietz No. This is a pair of Dietz No. 100 lanterns specially made for Los Angeles County for L. Original green paint with the original ruby red glass globes (unmarked). These were used on street barricades prior to the development of battery powered strobe flashers. Custom imprinted lanterns were ordered for government agencies, cities and municipalities so that ownership was never in question. On each lantern’s kerosene tank is a thick yellow L. Each has impressed/raised letters on the lower hood that also reads L. 100 is a variation on the Dietz “Little Giant”. It was designed to have a burn time of 100 hours. It has a 3/8 Burner. Both lamps have wicks measuring 1/2 wide. Lanterns date between the late 1930s to the mid-1950s. Amazing vintage display condition. These two lanterns have all the original parts except for the wick turning bars or keys on both of the’COMET’ burners (see photo of me pointing). These came from the garage of a retired L. County street maintenance worker. I didn’t meet him because he’s battling illness and is now in his 80s. The wood sign which reads CITY OF L. STREET MAINTENANCE ” is black lettering on white on a single solid wood plank measuring 30″ long x 7.25″ wide by 3/4″ thick. With nail holes and wear. Back side has remnants of reflective orange and white diagonally striped paint. The wood sign was displayed on the wall of his garage. Together the two matching large Dietz lanterns and road sign make a wonderful, historic and authentic display especially for those who a soft spot in their heart for the City of Angels.
