Condition: Artwork is in excellent condition. Certificate of authenticity: Yes. Notes: Martin Lawrence provenance on frame verso. His white chalk drawings could often been found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don’t think art is propaganda, ” he once stated. It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it. Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through the Pop Shop-Haring’s own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack is Wack (1986), can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D. Flavorite Brand VINTAGE San Fernando, California Orange Crate Label 1930 Genuine
This uncommon vintage 1930 orange crate label depicts two fairies with butterfly wings injecting flavor into oranges growing in a grove of trees at nighttime against a backdrop of fireflies. “Flavorite” is obviously a combination of “flavor” and “favorite”. Some of the new labels that emerged in the Advertising Age of California Orange Crate Labels (1920 – 1935) reflected the Art Deco design movement. At its best, this art treatment created a feeling of modern elegance. On labels of the 1920s and early 1930s, it was combined with innovative color treatments made possible because of the development of new printing ink formulations and sophisticated printing registration techniques. The result was a succession of attractive new label designs such as Flavorite. Through its use of stylized imagery Flavorite successfully conveys its advertising message by using an unusual design theme and color treatment in conjunction with a prominent display of oranges as an integral part of the design. McClelland & Jay T. Flavorite Brand label printed by Western Lithographic Company, Los Angeles, CA, #130 Used by the American Fruit Growers, Inc. Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA The packing house of American Fruit Growers was at 2160 East Seventh Street, Los Angeles.

ANNUAL REPORT of California SURVEYOR-GENERAL 1863 Post Gold Rush County Reports
ANNUAL REPORT of California SURVEYOR-GENERAL 1863 Post Gold Rush County Reports. TITLE: Annual Report of the Surveyor-General of the State of California for The Year 1862. Houghton, Surveyor-General of California, et al. PUBLISHER: Sacramento, California: Benjamin P. DESCRIPTION: 148 pages, folding chart. CONDITION NOTES: VERY GOOD. Some peeling to spine. Pages clean, except for a couple of pages with light foxing. Chart properly folded with a small stub tear. Want to see the mother of all land rushes underway? Read the reports from the various California county surveyors touting their bounty, counting their cattle, and bickering over boundaries (in the two appendices). A report to Leland Stanford, Governor of California in the 12th year of statehood, compiled from correspondence by county surveyors and assessors, as well as state civil engineers. State and County Boundaries. Canals, and Drainage of the Sacramento Valley. An additional report on Irrigation by Civil Engineer Calvin Brown serves to detail the growing realization of the state’s unique climate, and its unusual dependence on seasonal water flow for agricultural abundance in the absence of a cold winter. Reports on Railway construction and Flood mitigation round out the statewide portion. Inally, two appendices include reports by each county’s surveyor and assessor giving insight into the state’s resources and the degree to which agriculture has progressed and survey/boundary issues have been resolved… Very readable and fascinating. Each county official was required by state law to report, but some submitted a short, very subjective descriptive letter, and others submitted full tables of statistics. Others, such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Bernardino submitted no letters, though some of their data appears on statewide tabulations. San Diego’s data appears nowhere. Is this a wartime measure, or is it a matter of insignificant population or agricultural yield that keep the Southern counties out of the Surveyor-General’s report? Listing and template services provided by inkFrog.

SCARCE NEWS FEATURE DISASTER: 1938 Los Angeles Flood Wide World News Svc Photos. EXTREMELY RARE FEATURE STORY: Set of nine silver photographs measuring from 9 x 7 detailing the flood of 1938, which was the worst in 70 years in Los Angeles, California. This set of news service photographs comes complete with captions telling of this disaster. By World Wide Photo Service.. The Los Angeles flood of 1938 was one of the largest floods in the history of Los Angeles, Orange, and Riverside Counties in southern California. The flood was caused by two Pacific storms that swept across the Los Angeles Basin in February-March 1938 and generated almost one year’s worth of precipitation in just a few days. Between 113-115 people were killed by the flooding. [1] The Los Angeles, San Gabriel and Santa Ana Rivers burst their banks, inundating much of the coastal plain, the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, and the Inland Empire. Flood control structures spared parts of Los Angeles County from destruction, while Orange and Riverside Counties experienced more damage. [1] The flood of 1938 is considered a 50-year flood. [3] In response to the floods, the U. Army Corps of Engineers and other agencies began to channelize local streams in concrete, and built many new flood control dams and debris basins. These works have been instrumental in protecting Southern California from subsequent flooding events, such as in 1969 and 2005, which both had a larger volume than the 1938 flood The Associated Press (AP) is an American multinational not-for-profit news agency headquartered in New York City that operates as a cooperative, unincorporated association. The AP is owned by its contributing newspapers and radio and television stations in the United States, all of which contribute stories to the AP and use material written by its staff journalists. As of 2007, needs update? News collected by the AP was published and republished by more than 1,700 newspapers, in addition to more than 5,000 television and radio broadcasters. The photograph library of the AP consists of over 10 million images. The AP operates more than 200 news bureaus in more than 100 countries. It also operates the AP Radio Network, which provides newscasts twice hourly for broadcast and satellite radio and television stations. As part of their cooperative agreement with the AP, most member news organizations grant automatic permission for the AP to distribute their local news reports. The AP employs the “inverted pyramid” formula for writing that enables the news outlets to edit a story to fit its available publication area without losing the story’s essentials. Cutbacks at rival United Press International in 1993 left the AP as the United States’ primary news service, although UPI still produces and distributes stories and photos daily. Other English-language news services, such as the BBC, Reuters and the English-language service of Agence France-Presse, are based outside the United States.
