About the artist: Emil Jean Kosa, Jr. Was born in Paris, France on November 28, 1903 to an artistic family. His father, Emil Kosa, Sr. Was an artist and craftsman, while his mother Jeanne Mares Kosa was a pianist at a Paris opera. He moved with his family in 1908 to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, so that his father could work alongside Alphonse Mucha in designing theatrical posters and painting a series of murals. In 1912, the family moved to Czechoslovakia (Austria-Hungary). When WWI ended, Kosa finished his art education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague while his family moved back to the United States. After his graduation, he moved to the States and lived in California with his family in 1921. He found employment as a mural artist and designer working for decorating firms and architects. He continued to take classes at the California Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1927. Upon receiving his naturalization in 1927, he left to Europe to study at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and under Pierre Laurens. He also received instruction on modern forms of artistic expression and non-objective painting from Frank Kupka. He worked as a mural artist and operated a business with his father producing decorative art for churches and auditoriums. The 1930s was a prosperous decade where Kosa established himself as a leading West Coast watercolor artist. Much of his subject matter at this point depicted trains, oil wells, industrial city scenes, and trucks parked for repair. His work was widely exhibited around America, including New York’s American Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design. He took a job in 1933 in the newly-formed special effects department at 20th Century Fox Studios where he was soon given the role of the art director and held this position for 35 years. In 1963, Kosa won an Oscar for his work on Cleopatra. In the 1940s, Kosa exhibited in solo shows at New York City’s Macbeth Gallery, Los Angeles County Museum, and many others. He was represented by Alexander Cowie of the Cowie Gallery and exhibited continuously throughout his life there. By the time Kosa’s wife passed away in 1951, the art world began to focus on modern art. Kosa would occasionally receive awards for his watercolors, but he began to focus on painting modern non-objective works indoors while some days painting his watercolors outdoors. His modern works were met with little to no public interest, but his portraits were met with praise. He produced a large number of commissioned portraits of movie stars, businessmen, and politicians and became known as the top portrait artist in Southern California. In 1952, on his trip to Paris, he married ballet dancer Elizabeth Twaddel. He continued to paint through the 1960s. His oeuvre includes portraits, seascapes, landscapes, figures, and florals in oil and watercolor. He died in Los Angeles on November 4, 1968. The etching is unframed and measures: 11.5″ x 9.75″. Landscape with mountain and river measures 10.25″ x 7″. The condition has signs of aging and yellowing but intact. Millier’Arthur Miller': An influential California etcher, painter and arts writer, Arthur Millier moved from England to Los Angeles in 1908. His first artistic training took place at the Art Students League, Los Angeles. He then served with the American Army in France during World War One. At the end of the war (1918), Arthur Millier completed his studies at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco. During the following years he taught art and etching techniques at such institutions as the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, University of Southern California and the Pasadena Art Institute. Arthur Millier also was the long time art editor and critic for the Los Angeles Times. From this important position, Arthur Millier was among the first to promote the growth of regional California art. His association with the California Scene Painters (also called the’California Group’) helped to establish the national reputations of such California artists as Emil Kosa, Phil Dike, Millard Sheets, Barse Miller and Rex Brandt. Arthur Millier’s first etchings and drypoints date from around 1920. They depict the back streets and the poor peoples of San Francisco. Within several years, however, he had turned primarily to the stately California landscape etchings and engravings for which he is now most highly regarded. Such fine work gained him prizes from the California Society of Etchers in both 1922 and 1928. Millier was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, California Society of Etchers, Print Makers’ Society of California and the California Art Club. This is a finely detailed and RARE Antique Early California Impressionist Landscape Aquatint Etching on paper, by renowned California Impressionist painter and printmaker, Orpha Mae Klinker 1891 – 1964. This work is titled: “Trees and Tide” in graphite in the lower left corner, and depicts a serene seaside scene, with calm and rollicking sea in the distance, tall trees, and delicately rendered foliage. This piece is signed and annotated in graphite at the lower center edge: “75/150 An Aquatint, ” and signed: by Orpha Klinker at the lower right edge. World War II, Klinker created pastel portraits for more than 1000 United States military personnel at various Veterans Hospitals. From the Mexican border to Death Valley she roamed, meeting and painting portraits of such characters as Death Valley Scotty, Shoshone Johnny, the ancient Indian who supposedly saw the first white man come to Death Valley, Emanuel A. Speegle, “The Last of the 49’ers” (over 90 years of age) and others. Orpha was active in keeping alive the memory of one historical event in particular, the signing of the Treaty of Cahuenga ending the Mexican War with California in 1847. At the site of the signing in North Hollywood, there is now a large memorial building, The Campo de Cahuenga, containing Orpha’s paintings and oil portraits of the signers, Col. Fremont and Jose Antonio Carrillo. She was vice president of the Campo de Cahuenga Association and was one of the best qualified and most genuinely interested historical painters in California. She is also noted for her oil paintings and portraits. She painted John H. Francis, founder and first principal of Polytechnic High School, L. Miss Mary Foy, first teacher and librarian of Los Angeles High School, and Dr. Joseph Widney, first president of U. And founder of its Medical School. She painted many famous and socially prominent people including Mrs. Bell, founder with her husband of Bel Air, California; Madame Caroline Severance, founder of the first two Women’s Clubs in the United States (the Boston Woman’s Club and the Friday Morning Club in Los Angeles); the famous humorist Will Rogers; the early movie star, Miss Claire Windsor; comedian Edgar Bergen and his daughter Candice; and many others. Orpha was commissioned to paint a very large portrait of one of the earlier mayors of Los Angeles while he was in office, Mayor Frank E. This portrait still hangs in the Los Angeles City Hall. She also did outstanding work as an illustrator, illustrating such books as Artists of the Desert and the Enchanted Pueblo by Ed Ainsworth of the L. TIMES, and many other books. Her family became a part of this history, owning the Klinker Building, regarded as the first skyscraper Los Angeles. She did a series of portraits and talks titled “Speaking of Pioneers, ” and her research led her far afield into deserts of California, Utah, and Arizona where she painted the Grand Canyon. One of her portraits was of the last of the “49ers, ” Emanuel Speegle. She also did a series of historical scenes on china plates, now collectors’ items and in 1939 designed the official seal of Los Angeles county.
