Millier’Arthur Miller': An influential California etcher, painter and arts writer, Arthur Millier moved from England to Los Angeles in 1908. His first artistic training took place at the Art Students League, Los Angeles. He then served with the American Army in France during World War One. At the end of the war (1918), Arthur Millier completed his studies at the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco. During the following years he taught art and etching techniques at such institutions as the Chouinard School, the Otis Art Institute, University of Southern California and the Pasadena Art Institute. Arthur Millier also was the long time art editor and critic for the Los Angeles Times. From this important position, Arthur Millier was among the first to promote the growth of regional California art. His association with the California Scene Painters (also called the’California Group’) helped to establish the national reputations of such California artists as Emil Kosa, Phil Dike, Millard Sheets, Barse Miller and Rex Brandt. Arthur Millier’s first etchings and drypoints date from around 1920. They depict the back streets and the poor peoples of San Francisco. Within several years, however, he had turned primarily to the stately California landscape etchings and engravings for which he is now most highly regarded. Such fine work gained him prizes from the California Society of Etchers in both 1922 and 1928. Millier was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, California Society of Etchers, Print Makers’ Society of California and the California Art Club. Sterling Sharpe (born April 6, 1965) is a former American football wide receiver for the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the South Carolina Gamecocks, and played in the NFL from 1988 to 1994 with the Packers in a career shortened by a neck injury. He became an analyst for the NFL Network. He is the older brother of Pro Football Hall of Fame tight end Shannon Sharpe. Career highlights and awards. 3× First-team All-Pro (1989, 1992, 1993). 3× NFL receptions leader (1989, 1992, 1993). 2× NFL receiving touchdowns leader (1992, 1994). NFL receiving yards leader (1992). Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. South Carolina Gamecocks No. The National Football League’s Green Bay Packers played two to four home games per year at Milwaukee County Stadium from 1953 to 1994, [47] after using Wisconsin State Fair Park in nearby West Allis from 1934 through 1951 and Marquette Stadium in 1952. [48][49] The Packers compiled a 76-47-3.615 regular season record at County Stadium over 42 seasons. It hosted at least one pre-season game annually during this time as well (except 1983), including the Upper Midwest Shrine Game. Financial considerations prompted the Packers to move some of their games to Milwaukee starting with the 1933 season, with one game played at Borchert Field. By 1995, multiple renovations to Lambeau Field made it more lucrative for the Packers to play their full home slate in Green Bay again for the first time since 1932. [50] Former Milwaukee ticket holders were offered tickets at Lambeau to one pre-season game and games 3 and 6 of the regular season schedule (later changed to games 2 and 5), in what is referred to as the Gold package. County Stadium was partly responsible for Lambeau Field’s existence, as it was not only intended to lure an MLB team to Milwaukee, but also to lure the Packers to Milwaukee full-time. As originally constructed, County Stadium was double the size of the Packers’ then-home, City Stadium. By the 1950s, a number of teams had let it be known that they were not willing to play at City Stadium. It could not be expanded, and its amenities for fans and players had long since fallen below NFL standards. This led the NFL to give the Packers an ultimatum-build a bigger stadium or move to Milwaukee full-time. Green Bay responded with a referendum that resulted in a new City Stadium, which opened in September 1957. [51] After eight seasons, the venue was renamed “Lambeau Field” shortly after the death of team founder Curly Lambeau in 1965. The Minnesota Vikings (15 times) were the Packers’ most frequent foe at County Stadium, as the Packers would traditionally host at least one divisional rival from the NFC Central in Milwaukee each season. Only once, however, did the Packers play their ancient arch-rivals, the Chicago Bears, in a regular-season game in Milwaukee, defeating the Bears 20-3 in 1974. The Packers and Bears played preseason games at County Stadium every year from 1959 to 1973, and again in 1975 and 1984. [52] On November 26, 1989, a County Stadium record crowd of 55,892 saw the Packers beat the Vikings, 20-19. [53] The Packers’ final game at County Stadium was a 21-17 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on December 18, 1994;[54] with fourteen seconds left, the winning 9-yard touchdown run was scored by quarterback Brett Favre, who was drafted by the Falcons in 1991 but traded the next year due to then-Atlanta coach Jerry Glanville’s intense dislike of Favre. The Packers hosted one NFL playoff game at County Stadium, in 1967, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 28-7 in the Western Conference championship game, avenging a 27-24 loss two weeks earlier at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. [58][59][60][61][62] It was the first year that the NFL playoffs expanded to four teams, and Green Bay had home field advantage for both rounds, then awarded by rotation. Each subsequent playoff game has been played at Lambeau Field, starting with the Ice Bowl the following week against the Dallas Cowboys. Unlike most publicly funded stadiums built in the 20th century, County Stadium was built primarily for baseball, creating issues for hosting football. The playing surface was just barely large enough to fit a football field, which ran parallel with the first base line. The south end zone spilled onto the warning track in right field, while the north end zone spilled into foul territory on the third-base side. [54][64] Both teams occupied the east sideline on the outfield side, separated by a piece of tape. At its height, it seated less than 56,000 for football-just over the NFL’s post AFL merger minimum seating capacity-and many seats had obstructed views or were far from the field. Over the years, upgrades and seat expansion almost exclusively benefited the Braves and later the Brewers. We have more collectibles & memorabilia so be sure to check out our other items!

DAVID HOCKNEY- 1988 “LACMA: A Walk Around The Hotel Courtyard, Acatlan”. This 1988 LACMA exhibition was remembered for the wildly successful opening party on Feb. 3, 1988, when over 3000 people showed up. Throngs of hundreds waited outside and down the street. Many were high dollar LACMA contributors and still getting in wasn’t easy. David Hockney painted “A Walk Around the Hotel Courtyard, Acatlán”. In 1985 after discovering a hotel courtyard in Mexico, when car trouble forced him to stop on the way while driving to Mexico City. The painting is one of his more hotly colored works, being mostly red, with green and yellow, and is done in reverse perspective. In the painting the detail of the columns is gone, the painter has vanished, but the viewer is presented with a space where distance is abolished. There is cubism, “scientific” objectivity is gone, and plurality of space is emphasized. Reverse perspective is used to produce an all-seeing experience leading to a visionary feeling. Like a frame around paintings which decorate an altar, it seems to amalgamate real space with the world of the miracle. The original oil on two canvases or a “diptych” measure 183×610 centimeters overall. It is owned by the Benesse Corporation and is currently on display at Benesse House and Art Site, a contemporary art museum and hotel at the art village of Noashima, Japan. Bradford College of Art, Royal College of Art, London. Known for his photo collages and paintings of Los Angeles swimming pools, David Hockney is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. In fact, in a 2011 poll of more than 1,000 British artists, Hockney was voted the most influential British artist of all time. For nearly 60 years, David Hockney (British, born 1937) has pursued a singular career with a love for painting and its intrinsic challenges. This major retrospective-the exhibition’s only North American venue-honors the artist in his 80th year by presenting his most iconic works and key moments of his career from 1960 to the present. Working in a wide range of media with equal measures of wit and intelligence, Hockney has examined, probed, and questioned how to capture the perceived world of movement, space, and time in two dimensions. The exhibition offers a grand overview of the artist’s achievements across all media, including painting, drawing, photography, and video. From his early experiments with modernist abstraction and mid-career experiments with illusion and realism, to his most recent, jewel-toned landscapes, Hockney has consistently explored the nature of perception and representation with both intellectual rigor and sheer delight in the act of looking. David Hockney British, b. 1937 has produced some of the most vividly recognizable and influential works of the twentieth century. Hockney gained notoriety in his mid-twenties, after receiving the Gold Medal from London’s Royal College of Art, and he quickly became one of the defining figures of the British Pop Art movement. In the late 1960s Hockney relocated to California and established himself as a prolific figurative and landscape artist. He is perhaps best recognized for the works he produced there: brightly colored, large-scale evocative images of the Southern California lifestyle, and domestic, intimate portraits of his friends, family, and lovers. Hockney’s works are notable for their quietness of subject, flatness of space, and subtle reduction of form. Throughout his career he has worked in a wide variety of media, including painting, drawing, collage, photography, and printmaking, often utilizing contemporary technologies, including fax machines, laser photocopiers, and other 20th- and 21st-century digital instruments. Hockney has received a vast number of awards and honors, including the First Annual Award of Achievement from the Archives of American Art, Los Angeles; membership to the Board of Trustees of the American Associates of the Royal Academy Trust, New York; Distinguished Honoree of the National Arts Association, Los Angeles; the Lorenzo de Medici Lifetime Career Award of the Florence Biennale; and nine honorary degrees from institutions worldwide. In 1997, he was made a Companion of Honour from the British and Commonwealth Order for his outstanding achievement in the arts. David Hockney’s work can be found in numerous distinguished public collections around the world, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Art Institute of Chicago; the National Portrait Gallery, London; The Tate Gallery, London; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; the Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D. And the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D. He currently lives and works in Normandy, France.
